Refugees by force, doctors by choice

When I was 10, I witnessed the clashes inside Nahr el-Bared camp, says Huriyah el Moussa, "I saw people being injured and hurt, and as a result, all I knew was that I wanted to help. That was when I decided to become a doctor". She was also keen on where she wanted to study medicine, but it was all a dream given that the university of her choice was the American University of Beirut and the finances for it were against her. But eventually, it all worked out, and she found organizations like Taawon that supported her dream enough for its realization.
Today and with her hard-sought-after degree, Huriyah promises to continue her degree and specialize in Gynecology to help her community and wishes that the upcoming Palestinian youth seeks higher education because it’s the only way to persevere and truly lift the community. "To all the entities that have helped me achieve my dream and will help achieve the dreams of many young Palestinians like me, thank you!"

Medicine is Rawan's passion. She chose it fully aware that while it's the noblest profession it's still limited in terms of practice. "I know I can’t open my own clinic because as a Palestinian I can’t register in the syndicate of doctors of Lebanon. I can, however, work in hospitals and that’s enough for me knowing I will help patients, which is my sole goal," Rawan admits.
"I wish for all the young Palestinian men and women to never give up in the face of challenges and in the pursuit of their dreams because there are doors with bright futures waiting for them and many entities willing to support their journey.”
Huriyah and Rawan are among hundreds of Palestinian refugee students in Lebanon who receive scholarships and loans to pursue their university education as part of Taawon's university education program in collaboration with the Palestinian Students fund and Unite Lebanon Youth Project.
