Embracing Fresh Starts: Palestinian Elderly Find Hope in Wavel Camp, Baalbek
Amina, an 80-year-old Palestine refugee, who fled with her family, from Nazareth to Lebanon, when she was 3 years old is still hopeful for better days.
Clearly so.
Wearing the traditional Palestinian thobe -a dress only worn on special occasions- Amina was waiting for us with open arms. Due to her severe curvature in her back (forward bending of the back) and her foot pain, she couldn’t walk or get around easily.
“I haven’t been able to walk around Wavel camp in six years. The most I can do is visit my neighbor,” she said, pointing to the neighbor’s door, which is right next to hers. “And even that I can’t do without someone’s help!” But that was about to change because our visit to Amina involved delivering a wheelchair! “I can now ask my granddaughters to take me on a stroll around the refugee camp,” Amina rejoiced.
It was a great day for Amina in many ways. Shortly after receiving the wheelchair, she was taken to a bus for a trip to Anjar—the first outing she had in six years.

Thanks to the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund (LHF), we're assisting 720 elderly individuals, both with and without disabilities, in Beddawi and Nahr El-Bared camps in North Lebanon, as well as Wavel camp in the Bekaa valley. Our support includes providing assistive devices, physiotherapy services, home medical care, follow-up services, partial funding for surgeries, and organizing recreational activities to improve their quality of life.
