Thirty Seconds, One Big Dream: Adam’s Journey Through Rehabilitation

Adam was born with a significant lack of oxygen at birth, which affected his ability to move his limbs and left his small body experiencing severe muscle stiffness and spasticity.

From the very beginning, Adam faced challenges that no child should have to face. Yet alongside those challenges, he showed a determination far greater than his age.

His rehabilitation journey began with intensive therapy to reduce muscle stiffness and strengthen the muscles in his back and legs. The first goal was simple but significant: to sit independently.

The bigger dream? To walk one day.

Thirty seconds that changed everything

Today, something that once seemed almost impossible has happened.

Adam was able to sit independently for half a minute.

Thirty seconds may seem like a small amount of time. For Adam and his family, however, those thirty seconds are a victory. They are evidence of progress, the result of persistence, and an important first step on a much longer journey.

For children with disabilities, progress can sometimes come in moments that may appear small to others. Sitting independently for thirty seconds can represent weeks or months of therapy, effort, encouragement, and determination.

For Adam, those thirty seconds matter.

Every therapy session makes a difference

Adam’s condition remains complex, and his progress requires continued support and rehabilitation. Each therapy session plays an important role in helping him maintain and build on the abilities he has gained.

Continued rehabilitation can help turn thirty seconds into minutes, and minutes into steps.

This is why access to regular, quality therapy is so important for children with disabilities. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy can support children according to their individual needs, helping them develop skills, strengthen their abilities, and participate more fully in everyday life.

For Adam, every session is part of the journey towards greater independence.

Supporting children with disabilities through comprehensive care

Providing free rehabilitation and therapy sessions for children with disabilities is one part of a broader approach to disability inclusion at Taawon.

Through its Disability and Inclusion Programme, Taawon supports children and people with disabilities through a range of interventions. These include therapy and rehabilitation, the provision of assistive devices, the rehabilitation of specialized centers, and training and capacity building for professionals working with children with disabilities.

The programme also supports the development of specialized resources and guidance materials to promote greater awareness and understanding of disability inclusion.

The aim is not simply to provide a single service, but to contribute to an environment where children with disabilities can access the support they need to develop their abilities and pursue greater independence.

One child, one milestone, one step forward

Adam is one of more than 80 children receiving therapy through the programme.

Based on each child’s needs, the sessions include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Since the beginning of 2026, more than 350 therapy sessions have been provided.

Each session represents more than an appointment. It is an opportunity for a child to work towards a new skill, maintain progress, build confidence, or take another step towards greater independence.

For Adam, that progress can now be measured in thirty seconds.

And thirty seconds can be the beginning of something much bigger.

With continued access to rehabilitation and therapy, those thirty seconds may become minutes. Those minutes may become steps.

And one day, those steps may take Adam towards the dream he has been working towards all along: standing on his own feet and walking forward.
